The single most important part of the Edge's ministry is our outreach to the hungry.
John 21: 17 Jesus said, "Feed my sheep". This is the mission of our food shelf ministry.
We strive to remain focused on God and led by the Holy Spirit to serve those in need with dignity and respect. We use God's gifts and those He calls to nourish and nurture His people physically with food, emotionally with friendship, and spiritually with prayer.
By sharing His blessings we build supportive relationships, encourage spiritual growth, and promote peace and unity.
Many people in our community have been hit hard by the economic crisis.
The statistics are staggering:
- 1 out of 10 kids in Minnesota is living hungry.
- Visits to food shelves in the state totaled more than 614,000 in the first quarter of 2009. That’s an increase of 28 percent over the same period last year.
- The number of children visiting food shelves also increased over the same time period, from nearly 192,000 in 2008 to over 236,000 in 2009.
Hunger Solutions says main factors are the recession, rising food costs and a steadily high unemployment rate.
Record increase in visits to Minnesota food shelves....
The first four months of 2009 saw a record increase in visits to Minnesota food shelves.
Increase in use and decrease in food is attributed to lack of adequate employment opportunities in the area and a general tightening of most budgets due to the slow economy. Economic troubles trickle down to the food shelf.
Canned meats such as tuna, chicken and Spam; canned fruits and fruit juices; and even staples like peanut butter, condensed soup and pork and beans were low.
